10th January 2019

Dear Parents / Carers,

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy new year and welcome everyone back to school.  I hope you have all had a relaxing break and are ready for a busy spring term. Our class topic for this half term is Pop Art.  Over the coming weeks we will be exploring the lives of a range of artists and also creating our own artistic pieces. In science we will be learning about the Earth and space. We have a visit to Jodrell Bank planned for Monday 21st January. During the first half of this term we will be busy rehearsing for our spring production. Pupils who are required to attend rehearsals after school on Fridays will be informed in advance. After half term we have our residential visit to the Castleshaw Centre to look forward to.

Our English work will include grammar and comprehension practice, while learning about stories from other cultures. In maths, we will continue to develop our understanding of calculation methods and place value, while also learning about fractions, percentages and units of measure. Home Learning will usually be set on Thursdays, for return to me by the following Monday. This gives your child an evening to have a quick look and any questions regarding the work can be answered on the Friday. I will begin the term by setting the weekly spellings on a Tuesday, for testing on the following Monday. We will also have an additional spelling list for the Key Stage 2 Spelling Bee. Any support you give to your children with this work will have a positive impact on any work they do in class.

PE will be on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays for this half term. We will not be swimming this half term, apart from in the first week. Indoor and outdoor PE kits should be kept in school throughout the week in case we get any additional sporting opportunities. We are still in the winter months so please ensure your child has tracksuit bottoms and a jumper or fleece.  A carrier bag for wet clothes and spare socks would be useful, as changeable weather will not stop us from enjoying the outdoor environment.  If you have any queries or concerns please do not hesitate to speak to me, either at the start or at the end of the school day, except for Wednesdays as that is when we have our staff meetings. I am truly look forward to the challenges that this exciting new year will bring.

Yours sincerely
