Castleshaw Residential -

9th & 10th May 2019

Year 5 visited Castleshaw and stayed overnight. They walked miles and showed great resilience, teamwork and determination. All the children did their best in each activity. Well done Year 5 - you were amazing!

Welcome to Year Five's Web Page!                       Year 5 Blog

23rd April 2019

Dear Parents / Carers,

This year is going so quickly. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to school for the summer term.  I hope you have all had a relaxing break and are ready for a busy term. Our class topic for this half term is Water Worlds.  Over the coming weeks we will be exploring uses of rivers and creating our own artistic pieces inspired by river bank images. We will also look at  the water cycle and the actions of rivers. In science, we will be learning about animals, including humans. Year 5 will take part in Bikeability next week, so they will need to bring bikes and safety helmets too. We have our residential visit to the Castleshaw Centre to look forward to on Thursday 9th May. In addition, we have also secured a creative writing session at the Gallery in Oldham which promises to be a really interesting opportunity.

Our English work will include grammar and comprehension practice, while learning about developing narrattive. In maths, we will continue to develop our understanding of calculation methods and place value, while also learning about fractions, percentages and units of measure. Home Learning this half term will be the independent research portfolios. I will continue setting the weekly spellings on a Tuesday, for testing on the following Monday, except for the weeks containing bank holidays. We will also have an additional spelling list for the Key Stage 2 Spelling Bee. Any support you give to your children with this work will have a positive impact on any work they do in class.

PE will be on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for this half term. Indoor and outdoor PE kits should be kept in school throughout the week in case we get any additional sporting opportunities. We are heading towards warmer weather so please ensure your child has tracksuit bottoms and a jumper or fleece, also a water bottle is important so we can stay hydrated.  A carrier bag for wet clothes and spare socks would be useful, as changeable weather will not stop us from enjoying the outdoor environment.  If you have any queries or concerns please do not hesitate to speak to me, either at the start or at the end of the school day, except for Wednesdays as that is when we have our staff meetings. I am truly look forward to the challenges that this exciting new year will bring.

Yours sincerely
