Welcome to Year Three's Web Page!

 September 2018

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome to the new school year. We hope you have had a restful break. The children seem to be settling into their new class and adapting to Key Stage 2 life well.

This term, our history based topic focusses on learning about the Stone age to Iron age and then the Romans during the second half term.We will develop our understanding of chronology as well as how we use different sources of evidence to learn about life in the past.

In maths,  we  will be concentrating mainly on Place value in number, including  reading, writing, ordering  and comparing up to four digit numbers as well as adding and subtracting using formal written methods. Science work will involve the study of rocks and soil, whilst in English, we will continue to work on sentence structure in both fiction and non fiction writing.

Outdoor PE will take place on Wednesday and indoor PE on Thursday and Friday. Indoor PE kit consists of a pair of navy shorts, white T-shirt and pumps and outdoor kit consists of tracksuit bottoms, a sweatshirt and a pair of trainers. A spare carrier bag would be useful for wet clothes and trainers. School shoes are not permitted for PE lessons. Long hair must also be tied back and watches and earrings need to be removed. Please can you ensure that all kit and school uniform is clearly named.

Reading arrangements are slightly different in KS2. As previously, your child will be allocated a reading day at which time they will read with myself or another member of staff. This could be as part of a group, in a pair or individually. The          ‘ guided reading book’  will be kept in school and your child will read this book throughout the week during the guided reading sessions. In addition to this book, your child will also have an independent reading book which needs to be brought into school daily and is to be read both at home and at school. This can be your child’s own book from home or one that has been chosen from the class library. As always please read as much as you can with your child and also encourage your child to read a range of fiction and non fiction text suitable for their age and reading ability.

Home Learning will be set on Thursdays to be completed and returned on Monday. Please encourage your child to have a look at the task on the night it is set so that if there are any problems he/she can ask for any further explanation on the following day. Spellings will be given on Tuesdays and tested the following Tuesday. Please help your child to learn a few spellings each day. Please also practise the 2, 3x 4 and 5x  tables as well as number bonds to 20 to help your child  carry out mental calculations speedily.

Please could your child continue to bring into school a bottle of water and also  a healthy snack to be consumed during morning break. Unfortunately children in KS2 are not provided with a daily piece of fruit.

We look forward to an enjoyable and productive term ahead of us and thank you in advance for your support. If you have any concerns or queries, I am available after school most nights except Tuesdays (staff meeting), or just send in a note. Mrs Leigh is also available, preferably by appointment.

Yours Sincerely,

Mrs. Y  Ashraf             Mrs  M Ferguson
