Welcome to Year Five's Web Page!                       Year 5 Blog

6th January 2017

Dear Parents / Carers,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to school for an exciting summer term.  I hope you have all had a relaxing Easter break and are ready for a busy run up to the end of Year 5. Our class topic for this half term is ‘Water Worlds’.  Over the coming weeks we will be learning about how essential water. We will look at the water cycle and consider how water impacts on the lives of humans, other animals and the environment. This is a geography topic but there will be opportunities for learning across the curriculum. After the half term we will be learning about movies with our ‘Lights, Camera, Action!’ topic. Our first class trip will be to the Castleshaw Centre for a residential visit.

Our English work will include grammar and comprehension practice, while learning about scripts, dialogue and the importance of editing our work to improve it. In maths, we will be learning about angles, units of measure, percentages and decimals. Home Learning will usually be set on Thursdays, for return to me by the following Monday. This gives your child an evening to have a quick look and any questions regarding the work can be answered on the Friday. I will begin the term by setting the weekly spellings on a Tuesday, for testing on the following Monday. We will also have an additional spelling list for the Key Stage 2 Spelling Bee. Any support you give to your children with this work will have a positive impact on any work they do in class.

PE will be on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for this half term. We will not be swimming. Indoor and outdoor PE kits should be kept in school throughout the week in case we get any additional sporting opportunities. Weather can be changeable so please ensure your child has tracksuit bottoms and a jumper or fleece.  A carrier bag for wet clothes and spare socks would be useful, as unpredictable weather will not stop us from enjoying the outdoor environment.  If you have any queries or concerns please do not hesitate to speak to me, either at the start or at the end of the school day, except for Wednesdays as that is when we have our staff meetings. I am truly look forward to the challenges that this exciting new school year will bring.

Kind regards
