Welcome to Year Four's Web Page!

Dear Parents / Carers,

It’s finally spring – I hope you have had a fantastic Easter. Our topic for this half term is ‘rainforests’. We will try to tie as much of our learning as possible to this topic. In maths we will be looking at place value, two step problem solving and having a big push with time. I have seen a big improvement with some children regarding time, lots of great stories about parents questioning their children and learning the time round the table after tea, this is brilliant. I will still be incorporating this into our daily routine, but there is still lots of practise needed. If you could help your child with this at home by asking them to verbally tell you the time in words, 12 hour and 24 hour that would be very helpful for them. Our English work will be focused on report writing, linking to our rainforest topic, traditional tales and persuasive writing.

Home Learning will still be set on Thursdays, for return to me by the following Monday. This gives your child an evening to have a quick look at the homework and any questions regarding the work can be asked and answered on the Friday before the weekend. I will be setting weekly spellings each Tuesday, for testing on the following Monday. As last half term, following feedback from parents evening the spellings set will include five from the Year 2 National Curriculum list. As with the times tables, please encourage your child to learn these either by repetition, reading, playing games! By the end of this school year the children need to know up to 12x12, so lots of encouragement at home will help secure them, so please keep working on these too.

Reading groups and days have changed. Please can I request that your child comes to school with a reading book from home that they will take home each day and read in the evening, your child will benefit greatly from spending reading time with you. There will also be books available at school too that they can take home.

The children will have a dance lesson this half term every Tuesday and a gym/apparatus lesson on Wednesday, for which indoor kit of plain white T-shirt and blue shorts will be needed. Fridays will be games outdoor.

I really enjoyed working on the Australia topic with the children last half term and I know lots of them engaged with the topic and worked hard on it, completing extra research and work at home, this was lovely to see and I hope they will work as hard on this topic.

Please do not hesitate to speak to me if you have any queries or concerns, either at the start or at the end of the school day.

Kind regards

Miss K Leigh
