Year 2 – Summer Term

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to the summer term and we hope you have had a lovely Easter break.

This term Year 2’s topic is called ‘New Life’ and will be a very Science based topic. The children will be looking at the habitats and basic needs of many animals, including humans. There will also be many links to other curriculum areas.

In English the children will be learning about non-fiction texts and will even get the chance to create their own. They will also continue with the school’s phonics scheme and joined handwriting scheme, with which they are all making good progress. Please continue to read with your child at home and allow them to read aloud to you. If your child reads a Read, Write Inc. Phonics book, then please do continue to practise the sounds, green words and red words at the start of the text and ask the questions provided at the back of the text. The children do receive ladybirds for journal work, so please encourage them to do some, as this is great preparation for Year 3, where they will be set a weekly home learning task.

In Maths they will continue to develop the speed of their mental recall of the multiplication facts and will continue to derive the matching division facts. They will also be working on place value, column addition and subtraction, problem solving, shape, money and measures. You can help with this at home by regularly completing suggested activities shared with you at parents’ evening and also by using the resources sent home at Christmas.

As you are aware the children will be completing the assessment tests this half term. Teacher assessment scores will be reported to you when you receive your child’s annual school report, in the second half of this term. It is important that your child is in school on time and is not absent during this assessment period. If your child is poorly, may we remind you to phone school, as soon as possible, to let us know that your child will be absent that day.

We are also very lucky this term to have a student from Manchester University working on her final placement in Year 2. Her name is Miss Moody and she is very much looking forward to working with the children.

Many thanks for your continuing support with your child’s learning.
